Capture
I'd like to explain "capture", the first of three major characteristic marks in Shogi.
At first, please take a look at Fig.1. There are the 角(bishop), the 金(gold) and the 歩(pawn) in the area where the 飛(rook) at 5五(5e) can move. For example, when you move the 飛(rook) to 2五(2e), you can capture the 角(bishop) and get it as a "piece in hand", which you can put no matter where you want to. You can capture only one piece in time. When you capture the 金(gold), you can do in the same way. However, 歩(pawn) at 5八(5e) is your own piece, so you cannot capture it.

Fig.1.
Even though you can capture a piece, you sometimes should not capture it. Please take a look at Fig.2. The 飛(Rook) at 2八(2h) can capture the 歩(pawn) at 2三(2c). However, your opponent's 金(gold) at 3二(3b) also can move to 2三(2c), so after your 飛(rook) capture the 歩(pawn), the 飛(rook) will be captured by the 金(gold). As a result, you will have the 歩(pawn) in hand, but your opponent will have a 飛(rook) in hand, which is much more powerful than 歩(pawn). It is the opponent's advantage. For this reason, you had better not capture 歩(pawn).
